One of the world's most handsome and powerful steam locomotives, the GS-4, called the "Daylight" locomotive— powered one of the world's most beautiful trains, the "Coast Daylight" shown here moving along the Pacific shore on Southern Pacific's Coast Route.
The GS-4, a Southern Pacific design, was often called... "the most well-proportioned steam locomotive ever built." The engine and tender were over 110-feet long, and carried 80-inch drivers. The GS series of locomotives first began service in 1937, and the last one was retired in 1958. Repainted in red, white and blue, No. 4449 was used during the 1976 American Bicentennial celebration to power the American Freedom Train across the nation.
